Blood Diamonds | Glossary | Blood diamond A diamond that has been mined in a country dealing with civil wars or any sort of conflict. Diamonds that fall under this category are usually mined illegally by rebel groups, using the civilian population brutally as slaves and prisoners. These diamonds are then sold to the outside world through illegal means. The profit gained from the sales of these diamonds is then used to fund their own wars.
Carat The unit of weight used to gauge diamonds
Conflict diamond See blood diamond. Some sectors consider this term as a euphemism for blood diamonds.
Cultured Diamond Preferred by to be called synthetic or artificial diamonds by the diamond industry, cultured diamonds are diamonds that are physically, chemically, and structurally the same as natural diamonds. Their only distinction is that cultured diamonds are manufactured in laboratories.
Diamond Pledge A pledge consumers can take to help stop the conflict diamond trade. The pledge includes helping build awareness of the issue, contacting local MPs to support the need for monitoring, and asking jewelers what they are doing to help stop conflict diamond trading.
Kimberly Process An international initiative which aims to put an end to the mining and trading of conflict diamonds. The Kimberly Process is widely supported by the international diamond industry as well as different governments and international NGOs.
RUF Revolutionary United Front. The main rebel faction in Sierra Leone and widely known to be involved in the mining and trading of blood diamonds. The RUF is known to have Liberia’s backing.
UNITA União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (Portuguese), National Union for the Total Independence of Angola. The major rebel group in Angola, also known to bee deeply involved in blood diamonds.
